Shanghai Daily Buzzwords
Sifting through the various Chinese learning blogs out there, I found this gem, a blog with a weekly update for almost four years now, based on a column in Shanghai Daily. It covers various buzzwords in Chinese society and media. Here's an example from the most recent entry:

Were you aware that 哈...族 can also be used in Japanese and Korean contexts, e.g. 哈日族 and 哈韩族?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I wonder how 哈中族 compares with 中国通? Perhaps the former is more 口 and the latter more 书?

Yeah, I was aware of that.
ReplyDeleteI think 中國通 is a term with more positive connotations, like an "expert on all things Chinese". 哈中族 sounds more like "otaku", i.e a person who is really interested in Chinese culture but doesn't necessarily know all that much about it.
